The injured men drove themselves 30 kilometres to Palmerston North Hospital after being hurt by the unknown substance at the site in Kimbolton yesterday afternoon.

The hospital described the workers' injuries as minor and moderate respectively, but would not comment on the specific nature of the injuries.

The contractors were discharged yesterday evening.

Powerco said it was too early to say what had happened but it was looking into the incident.

The company's health, safety, environment and quality acting group manager, Don Elers, said safety was a top priority.

"We are taking the matter seriously and are investigating the incident," he said.

"Our focus is on supporting everyone involved."
