Body recovered from 'dangerous' Rotorua hot pool

5:56 pm on 13 October 2015

The death of a person in a hot pool in Kuirau Park in central Rotorua is not being treated as suspicious.

The body of the adult was recovered from one of the park's fenced-off geothermal pools just before 5pm.

Emergency services were alerted to the body by a member of the public about 1.30pm.

The recovery operation was carried out by the police, search and rescue staff, firefighters and local council workers.

Inspector Bruce Horne said the recovery was difficult due to the extreme temperature of the hot pool.

The police said the death would be treated as unexplained until they were able to identify the person and establish their last movements.

They said anything else at this stage was speculation but they were liaising with the Coroner.

The park, which was earlier cordoned off has been blessed and has re-opened.
