Otago faces high fire danger today

7:56 am on 21 October 2015

A combination of high winds and temperatures will create an extreme fire risk in Otago today.

Graeme Still from the Otago Rural Fire Authority told Morning Report today's weather patterns would be the same as those that caused problems last week.

He said forecasts were for winds of about 130 kms in exposed places, with temperatures in the mid-20s.

He said today's forecast weather pattern would make conditions extreme.

"The majority of people aren't going to light fires today, but what we're saying is any fire that's been lit within the last month needs to be checked thoroughly, just to make sure there's no embers about."

He said if a fire was sparked today, the fire authority would have a difficult time containing it.
