A 28-year-old man was left in a critical condition in hospital after he was attacked early this morning.

Police said the attack happened shortly after the victim of the attack had been kicked out of Lenin Bar off Quay Street about 5.30am.

The man, who is from overseas, was taken to hospital and had surgery for a head injury. Police said the man remained in hospital but his condition had improved and he was now conscious.

The 20-year-old man will appear in the Auckland District Court on Thursday, charged with injuring with intent to injure.

Police said they were still seeking a second man in relation to the assault.

The police are appealing for witnesses to the attack, saying there were large numbers of people around due to the Auckland Marathon and the Rugby World Cup.

They said earlier today that there had been several arrests after the game in Auckland but it was too early to tell how many were related to the rugby match.
