Shopper frees infants from locked car

A woman who spotted two infants locked in a car at Auckland's Westfield St Lukes intervened to get them out, in what a shopping centre spokesperson says is a "valuable lesson".

Westfield spokesperson Deb McGhie said a customer arrived at the carpark to see two children, both thought to be less than one year old, in the car alone yesterday.

Ms McGhie said the concerned woman reached into the car windows, which were partially open, to unlock the doors before taking the children out and waiting for the children's parent to come back.

Mall security also stepped in to help and called the mother back to the car, she said.

"The parent concerned has actually realised her mistake, and these things do happen. She probably thought she was just popping in for a minute, and going to be out in a minute," she said.

"[The parent] didn't pay much attention to that and I think she's probably learned a valuable lesson."

Ms McGhie said it was rare to have children left in cars in the mall's carpark.
