Two men have an expensive start to the New Year after police nabbed them sitting out the windows of a moving car and toasting each other with beers over the car roof.

Sergeant Neil Mansill, of the Huntly road safety team, said the two men were heading from Pukekohe to the Waikato to celebrate New Year's Eve and had started drinking early.
The woman driving the car told police they had refused to listen to her and get back in the car until "the long arm of the law reached out to tap them on the shoulder".
Both men received $150 infringement notices.
Mr Mansill said traffic was heavy coming out of Auckland and heading towards Coromandel and Raglan but most motorists were well behaved.
