The three-year-old boy, who was a twin, jumped into the parked vehicle on the driveway of his family's farm west of Tokoroa at about 9am, police said.

Sergeant Terry Garnett said preliminary findings showed the child knocked the gear lever out of the park position, or released the handbrake.

He said the vehicle then travelled down the driveway about 35 metres, and the child was struck after jumping or falling out.

Sergeant Garnett said it didn't appear anyone else was involved and the matter would be referred to the coroner.
