The man went into the water at Beach Haven wharf last night after a swimmer got into trouble.

The swimmer made it back to shore, but the other man did not.

A body was recovered this morning and the police said they were now working to contact next of kin.

A resident overlooking the harbour, Del Ammann told RNZ News he heard laughter from down at the water last night.

Mr Ammann said someone yelled out saying they could not swim, and then he heard nothing.

This morning he saw a police dinghy find a body floating in the water just off the shore, after a local alerted them to it.

Another resident overlooking the harbour told RNZ News she heard yelling coming from the water last night.

She said she distinctly heard someone saying they could not hold on any longer.
