Teenager charged over fatal crash

12:45 pm on 3 February 2016

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with multiple driving offences after the crash that killed two other teenagers on Sunday morning.

Pacer Willacy-Scott and Hoani Korewha, both aged 15, died on the weekend in the Masterton crash after allegedly fleeing police.

Police had abandoned the pursuit because of the way the car was being driven. A short time later the car crashed into a power pole.

The boy appeared in the Masterton District Court this morning charged with driving while forbidden, failing to stop for the police and unlawfully getting into a stolen motor vehicle.

He was remanded into the custody of Child, Youth and Family to reappear next week.

Further charges may follow.

Acting Wairarapa Area Commander Senior Sergeant Mike Sutton expressed his condolences to those affected by Sunday's incident.

"The loss of two young people is always a tragedy. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of all those involved.

"It is important, at this time, that people allow the police investigation process to run its course. We are dealing with extremely vulnerable and emotional young people who are struggling to come to terms with what has happened.

"We are further supporting the community by deploying additional staff to Featherston, where the young people were from."
