Investigation into Timaru sex attack

6:36 pm on 6 March 2016

A woman sexually assaulted in Timaru early this morning is distressed and now at home, say police.

Police are investigating the assault, between 3am and 5am near the public library.

A witness saw the woman with four Maori or Pacific Island men in a garden near the Timaru public library.

The witness shouted at the men, who then ran off towards Church Street.

Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Quested said the woman was taken to hospital for a medical examination in a distressed state.

He said she was sent home this morning.

Police are asking for anyone near the public library between 3am and 5am today - or who may know a group of four men in the area then - to come forward.
