Drilling has started at the site of apartments in the resort town after the claim was filed by the owners.

The geotechnical assessment of the underlying soil and rock is expected to last several days.

Council general manager of planning and development Tony Avery said the work was being done by an engineering consultant following the claim from the owners of the Heritage Heights Apartments at Anderson Heights.

He said the council was conscious of the potential liability to ratepayers, so it was important to obtain reliable evidence for defending the claim.

The case is due to be heard in July.
