A serious assault on an officer officer at the Hamilton Central Police Station has prompted a review of security, Waikato police say.
The officer suffered a fractured cheek, cuts and bruises in a scuffle police said broke out after a man began acting erratically while staff were attempting to help him with a query on Sunday evening.
The officer was taken to hospital and is now recovering at home.
A 20-year-old man has been charged with injuring with intent, wounding with intent and burglary, and is due to appear in court today.
The front counter of Hamilton Central Police Station will be closed overnights, from 7pm to 7am, while a safety review of the area is carried out.
Last month police said a review had highlighted a number of police stations where immediate practical steps were needed to increase security.
They announced plans to make the front counters of more than 300 stations safer for staff and visitors and were looking at making changes to 105 stations identified as most at risk, mainly in smaller towns or suburbs.
