11:09 pm on 11 May 2016

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake has shaken Christchurch this evening.

The quake hit 10km southeast of the city, at a depth of 16km, at 8:45pm.

GeoNet described the quake as strong, with more than 3000 people reporting having felt it on its website.

St John spokesman Ian Henderson said there been had no emergency calls as a result of the shake.

Nevertheless he encouraged people to check on friends and relatives, especially those who are alone, or ill, and who may need support.

People should also check their emergency kits and supplies, he said, because as this quake showed, Canterbury was still an active earthquake area.
