A 68-year-old woman missing since last night in Plimmerton, north of Wellington, has been found safe.

The police said Elizabeth Loughran had been found safe at the top of a hill and taken to hospital for a medical check-up.

Police, coastguard and a rescue helicopter were looking for Ms Loughran after she went missing from Plimmerton Boating Club last night.

Police sergeant Ants Harmer described Ms Loughran, who has Alzheimer's, as a determined and strong person for surviving the night in the bush.

He said is was a fantastic result to have found her quickly.

"We had one of our search teams up on a high point, and they've been able to locate Lizzy.

"She's obviously had a fall of some description and so we've contacted ambulance straight away."
