Two people are dead after a vehicle went over a bank on SH1 near Taihape and caught fire.
The crash happened north of the central North Island town shortly after 10pm last night.
One lane of the main highway was closed for several hours after the crash, but has now been reopened.
The Police Serious Crash Unit have started an investigation.
