Teenage girls charged over taxi robbery

Two teenagers have been charged after a taxi driver was attacked and the vehicle stolen in Hamilton.

Police said two girls called for a taxi overnight but when asked to pay for the trip up front the driver was assaulted and the car taken.

Spikes were deployed on Memorial Drive and the car was stopped on Anzac Parade near Hamilton Central Police Station.

Police say a 15-year-old faces counts of aggravated robbery, dangerous driving and failing to stop and a 17-year-old faces a charge of aggravated robbery.

Both are due to appear in Hamilton Youth Court today.
