School closure process defended

Lawyers representing the Minister of Education maintain the process followed in closing Aorangi School in Christchurch was fair.

Education Minister Anne Tolley announced late last month that the primary school will close during the summer holidays.

A judicial review of the process the Minister followed is underway before Justice French at the High Court in Christchurch.

The school board claims consultation by the Ministry of Education was flawed, the school was treated unfairly and the minister's decision is unreasonable.

However, a lawyer for the minister says the board's demands for information were unreasonable and outside the realms of usual consultation procedures.
