Cyclist's death prompts removal of parking spaces

6:24 am on 20 November 2010

The Auckland Council is removing parking spaces on Tamaki Drive in an attempt to make a blackspot where a cyclist died safer.

Jane Bishop was killed on Tamaki Drive on Wednesday night when the 27-year-old fell beneath an oncoming truck after trying to avoid a parked car's opening door.

Auckland Transport's Andrew Allen says four car parks will be taken away from the corner near Kelly Tarltons.

Mr Allen says parked cars on that stretch of road contribute towards making what he calls a "pinch point" for cyclists and removing parks will improve cycle safety.

A member of Cycle Action Auckland, Bevan Woodward, welcomes the move.
