Open day held to discuss Rena wreck

8:05 pm on 26 February 2013

The first of two open days aimed at providing information about what the Rena's insurer plans to do with the wreck has been held in the Bay of Plenty.

The Swedish Club is proposing to leave the rest of the container ship on Astrolabe Reef where ran aground on 5 October 2011.

The insurer says it plans to apply for consent under the Resource Management Act to leave the rest of the wreck and any debris on the reef in a way that is safe for the public.

It says it is seeking feedback from the Bay of Plenty community before it makes a final decision.

On Tuesday about 30 people attended the session at Mount Maunganui held between 4pm and 7pm.

They heard from a representative of the insurers as well as salvors from American salvage company Resolve.

Another open day will be held at the Mount Surf Club on Thursday evening.
