Queenstown hotels expect quiet period

Hotels in Queenstown are expecting a quieter than normal period during the Rugby World Cup.

An expected 8000 foreign tourists have begun arriving in Dunedin and surrounding towns for this weekend's match between England and Argentina.

The Irish and Georgian teams have arrived in Queenstown, but so far few tourists.

The Hotels Council says hotels are still hoping travellers will come between weekend matches in Dunedin and Invercargill.

But Queenstown-Lakes chair Penny Clark says they won't make up for the losses from the earthquakes in Canterbury, no school holidays and the economic downturn.
