The founder of a company that produces donor animal blood, serum and protein products has won the Distinguished Biotechnologist of the Year award.

The prize is awarded to those who have used biotechnology to contribute significantly to improving quality of life.

The judging committee says Dr William Rolleston has played a significant role in the development of the biotech industry.

Dr Rolleston chaired the Life Sciences Network during the debate surrounding the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification.

Dr Andreas Luxenburger of Industrial Research Limited was named 2009 NZBIO Young Biotechnologist of the Year.
