Split over new dairy conversion rule

12:51 pm on 12 April 2012

A new dairy conversion rule in Southland has divided farming representatives there.

Federated Farmers Southland members will meet next week to discuss the leadership of the province.

The meeting follows a fight by farmers to stop Southland Regional Council implementing a new rule requiring all farm conversions to gain resource consent. They lost that battle last week.

Contrary to Federated Farmers submission, Federated Farmers Southland president Hugh Gardyne spoke in favour of the conversion rule.

National president Bruce Wills says the leadership would have been discussed as usual at Southland's annual meeting in two weeks. But he says the issue needs to be resolved now.
