Otago couple win on farm sustainability

North Otago couple Blair and Jane Smith are the supreme winners of the 2012 Otago Ballance Farm Environment Awards.

The awards recognise the efforts farmers, orchardists and grape growers are making towards sustainability.

Mr and Mrs Smith run three family-owned sheep, beef, dairy and forestry operations, covering more than 1500 hectares.

One farm is home to the successful Newhaven Perendale and Perendale -Texel studs.

There are 60,000 trees on the three properties, including 16ha of douglas fir planted last year for carbon sequestration.

Competition judges say the couple have demonstrated excellent care of the environment and show a high level of entrepreneurship.
