Kiwifruit growers await details on financial support

Bay of Plenty kiwifruit growers whose livelihoods have been threatened by the PSA vine disease, are waiting to find out whether they will receive assistance under the Government's new primary sector recovery policy.

The Government has extended adverse event support which is available to farmers and fruit growers following a drought or flood, to include biosecurity.

Kiwifruit Growers president Neil Trebilco said the organisation is having talks with the Ministry for Primary Industries as to when an adverse event should be triggered.

"What we're looking at is when does the income that growers have received from prior year's crop, when does that income finish and when are they actually under financial stress so they need that assistance," he said.

Mr Trebilco said the organisation is surveying growers to find the appropriate time to start assistance, because it will only last for 12 months.

Mr Trebilco expects that once the survey is completed and the information is handed to the ministry, it will declare an adverse event pretty quickly.
