Formula milk powder plant to open in Balclutha

A new nutritional formula milk powder plant is due to open this week at Balclutha in South Otago.

The plant is owned by Gardians, a joint venture between a Dunedin based dairy farmer Grant Paterson and Auckland food packaging company Sutton Group.

Construction of the plant began in September last year, and the opening was originally scheduled for last month.

Gardians spokesperson James Shortall says it has the capacity to produce 20,000 tonnes of formula a year, most of which will be exported to South East Asia.

All the milk supplied to the plant will come from Mr Paterson's 11,500 cows around the region.
