Aussie shearer wins NZ merino title for third time

West Australian shearer Damien Boyle has achieved the hat trick at the New Zealand Merino finewool shearing championships in Alexandra, winning the open title for the third year in a row.

He was almost seven points ahead of runner-up Chris Vickers of Palmerston. Tony Coster of Rakaia was third.

World woolhandling champion Joel Henare of Gisborne won his first New Zealand Merino Championships open title, after finishing second twice previously.

Cushla Abraham of Masterton was runner-up in her first Open-class competition.

The senior shearing title was won by Brett Roberts of Mataura, Kodi Hawkins of Masterton won the senior woolhandling final, and the junior woolhandling title was taken by Raylene Johnston, of Milton.
