Online ram trading considered after bull auction success

One of the organisers of the country's biggest online bull sale says they are considering widening web trading to include rams, given the success of this week's auction.

The 24-hour sale finished on Thursday, with 36 of the 53 beef breed bulls sold.

The final prices ranged from $3750 to $7000, with a Simmental bull fetching the top price.

The auction was run by Focus Genetics, an amalgamation of Rissington Breedline and Landcorp's genetics division.

The company's animal breeding specialist, Daniel Absolom says the internet sale worked very well.

He says it gives everyone an equal opportunity to get the same bull and it allows bids to be put in remotely from anywhere in the country.

Mr Absolom says the result exceeded expectations, and on that basis consideration is being given to widening the online auction to include rams.

He says until now online auctions have not been widely adopted by New Zealand farmers because of challenges with internet access.

Mr Absolom says he was surprised how well most farmers could access the website and those who couldn't were able to talk to organisers for help.
