Beef and lamb prices strengthen

Prices for beef and lamb export are continuing to strengthen despite difficult economic conditions, figures from Meat and Wool New Zealand show.

In the first six months of this year, export lamb returns were up 27% to $8670 a tonne, compared with the same time last year. Beef export earnings rose 22% to $5420 a tonne.

Meat and Wool New Zealand chair Mike Petersen says price increases are being passed on to farmers, however those in drier areas are yet to feel the benefits, partly due to increased costs.
