Italians tackling vine disease differently, says grower

A Te Puke kiwifruit grower, Fred Harvey, is advising other growers to make sure they have all the facts before tackling Psa in their vines.

Mr Harvey has just returned from Italy, which has the world's biggest kiwifruit growing region. He says the Italians are taking a much different approach to New Zealand when it comes to tackling the vine-killing bacteria.

He says Zespri in New Zealand advises growers to use copper spray - which is supposed to stop the disease entering the vine - but Italian scientists advise against it.

Instead, growers are encouraged to ensure the vine can survive and thrive - even if it is contaminated with Psa - by using various nutrient-based formulas and heeping the soil as healthy as it can be.

Zespri says that it isusing Italian research and knowlege and that information is passed on to growers, who are free to choose how they manage their crops.

It says that together with Kiwifruit Vine Health it has committed to spending more than $10 million on research specific to New Zealand conditions, but there is no such thing as a miracle cure for Psa
