Mataura meat plant workers discuss future

2:16 pm on 24 October 2012

Hundreds of meat workers at two Alliance plants in Southland met on Tuesday to work through the options for their future employment.

The Alliance Group is proposing to transfer its sheep meat processing line at Mataura to its Lorneville facility, affecting 260 processing workers and 65 other staff.

The rest of the workers are being offered jobs at the Lorneville plant.

Meat Workers Union Southland secretary Gary Davis says those jobs are night shift positions, which he says won't suit everybody despite an offer from Alliance to transport the workers from Mataura to Lorneville each day.

Mr Davis says workers will be in a position to take either redundancy or a new position at Lorneville within about two weeks.
