Prime Minister John Key officially opens Fonterra's manufacturing plant at Darfield in Canterbury on Friday.
The plant began production in August and is now processing more than two million litres of milk per day.
That figure will treble when a planned second and larger drier comes online.
Its first shipment of 940 metric tonnes of milk powder was sent to China in September
