7:39 pm on 5 December 2012

There was strong interest in the first major southern stud ram sale of the new season on Tuesday, featuring the Romney and Southdown breeds.

Blair and Sally Robertson held their fourth sale at their Merrydowns property at Waikoikoi near Gore.

The sale drew buyers and observers from throughout the country and prices and demand indicated it could be a better season for stud ram sales.

The average sale price for Romneys was $1200 and just over 100 were sold, with 15 being passed.

The 108 Southdowns all sold at an average price of $970 and attracted very brisk bidding.

John Wynyard of Warkworth paid the top price for a Southdown at $3800.

The southern ram sales will continue into the new year.
