More jobs seen in forestry sector in lower North Island

Forestry could provide more jobs in the lower North Island as wood yields increase from maturing trees in the future.

A new report from the Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry forecasts an increase in wood availability after 2016, particularly from growers who established forests in the 1990s.

The report predicts there will be an increase in employment opportunities relating to forestry work, wood processing and export operations at the port of Wellington.

MAF research director Richard Lynch says roading and other infrastructure upgrades will be needed to cope with more logging.
