A Waikato University scientist has won investment for an idea to turn bloodmeal from meat processing into biodegradable plastic.
Dr Johan Verbeek, who will receive about $500,000 from the Wallace Corporation - New Zealand's largest rendering business.
He has been working on the idea since 2007 and hopes to have protein-based plastic products on shelves by 2015.
