A Gisborne chardonnay has taken top honours at this year's Romeo Bragato Wine Awards.
The Villa Maria Reserve Gisborne Chardonnay 2007, made from grapes grown by Tony Green of McDiarmid Vineyard, was awarded the Champion of Show title.
Chairman of judges Larry McKenna described it as a fantastic example of a modern New Zealand chardonnay with both complexity and depth.
The other top award, the Richard Smart Trophy and Reserve Champion Wine, was claimed by Evan and Kay Moore of Aravin Vineyard in Central Otago, for their Aravin Pinot Noir 2007.
The awards recognise grape growers' contribution to the production of top wines.
