$12,000 penalty for discharge of effluent

A Bay of Plenty sharemilker has been fined more than $12,000 in the Environment Court for a dairy effluent discharge breach on his farm.

John Wilson from Waimana pleaded guilty to discharging effluent from an irrigator, which may have resulted in the effluent entering a water drain.

The discharge was caused by a broken irrigation line from an irrigator that had been operating in the same place for a number of days.

He was prosecuted by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, which says it was the fifth prosecution in one season.
