Heavy lamb losses in snow for Landcorp

1:09 pm on 15 October 2009

Landcorp lost an estimated 6000 lambs, as well as cows and calves in heavy snow storms that hit the central North Island last week.

Chief executive Chris Kelly says they would have been worth $80 per lamb when finally mature and slaughtered.

Lambing and calving had just finished on most of the farms owned by the State farming company.

He says the snow storm losses have tempered what otherwise has been one of the best springs in years, helping farming operations to recover from the previous year's severe drought.
