The Waikato Regional Council is taking another step to ensure water quality in lakes and waterways is preserved.
Chairman Peter Buckley says the council has agreed to circulate a working draft on new water quality objectives to iwi and other key stakeholders.
Mr Buckley says the draft is part of an ongoing discussion about significant resource management issues which the council has to address next year in its formal Regional Policy Statement.
Sediment and nutrients from farming operations have been identified as key factors affecting water quality in Waikato. Runoff from farm land into waterways will be a focus for the regional council, he says.
