The forestry industry says benefits resulting from Emissions Trading Scheme negotiations with the Maori Party for iwi to plant trees on conservation land, must be made available to all.
Negotiations on the amended emission's legislation are intensifying, as the select committee considering the Government bill is deadlocked and unable to recommend it to Parliament.
The deal would see iwi gain carbon credits through forestry contracts, involving the planting of mostly native trees on what is deemed marginal land in the conservation estate.
However, Forest Owners Association chief executive David Rhodes says the Government must explore an equivalent deal to benefit all pre-1990 forestry owners, who incur deforestation liabilities for harvesting and not replanting.
