Shearing team has first win

New Zealand's shearing test team has tasted success for the first time on its northern hemisphere test tour, levelling the eight-match series with England at one-a-piece.

Golden Shears champion Rowland Smith, from Hastings, and Rakaia's Tony Coster combined to beat an English test pairing by three points at the Lakelands Shears in Cumbria.

Smith also won in the individual open competition, beating another New Zealander, defending champion David Fagan from Te Kuiti, who won last year at the age of 50.

Shearing Sports New Zealand spokesperson Doug Laing says Fagan, 51, only lost by a whisker.

Mr Laing says the next test is at the Great Yorkshire show on Thursday, then the series heads to Ireland for a test before heading to Wales for four tests.

The Lakelands Shears is the only shearing competition in the world where the Herdwick breed is exclusively shorn.
