SPCA launches Blue Tick cook book

7:29 am on 31 July 2013

Farmers who have signed up to the SPCA's Blue Tick programme will have their animal-welfare friendly produce featured in a new cook book being launched this week.

Well-known New Zealanders have contributed to the book, Made With Love, which features 50 recipes that use the Blue Tick programme's certified cruelty-free produced eggs, chicken, turkey and pigs. Also included in the cook book are recipes for salmon.

Blue Tick accreditation manager Juliete Banks says salmon has only just joined the programme and producers who want the tick have to measure up.

She says salmon producers will have to have reasonable stocking densities, deal with predators and disease appropriately as well as maintaining water and food quality.

Parliament's Speaker and former agriculture minister, David Carter, says in the foreword to the book that most people expect animals under New Zealand farmers' care to be healthy, comfortable and properly fed.
