Shearing Grand Slam begins

9:56 am on 13 February 2010

The first event in the Grand Slam of New Zealand shearing has started in Balclutha.

The Otago Championships will be followed over successive weekends by the Southern Shears in Gore and the Pahiatua Shears, and culminate in Masterton with the 50th anniversary of the Golden Shears competition.

David Fagan was the last person to take the grand slam, winning it in 2001 for the fifth time.

Friday's competition in Balclutha opened with lower-class heats, with open-class shearing and woolhandling events on Saturday.
