Alliance hoping to reopen Pukeuri

6:37 am on 21 August 2013

The Alliance Group is expecting to have its Pukeuri plant in North Otago processing sheepmeat for China again soon.

The Ministry for Primary Industries suspended the plant's certification for China last month after incorrectly labelled cartons of meat were sent there.

Alliance general manager of processing Kerry Stevens said the ministry is auditing the company's systems today and hopes to get the plant fully operational again soon afterwards, restoring the jobs of 240 meatworkers laid off last week.

Pukeuri continued processing bobby calves, but sheepmeat processing was transferred to the Smithfield plant at Timaru until Pukeuri regains its certification.
