The kiwifruit industry's new gold variety - marketed as SunGold - is getting some strong feedback from consumers in international markets according to exporter Zespri.

But while the industry is reporting good feedback from abroad, at home, it is working closely with orchardists to ensure they are growing a consistent tasting fruit.

Zespri is also spending millions of dollars bringing consumers overseas up to speed with the new fruit that it hopes will prove as popular as its Zespri Gold kiwifruit. That variety is being decimated by the bacteria Psa-V.

Zespri's global marketing manager Melanie Palmer says while the company is getting great reviews on SunGold from consumers - there is a lot of work involved in launching a new variety.
