Northland farmers urged to keep stock off roads

7:03 am on 9 September 2013

Over the last five years there have been nearly 150 crashes in Northland after stock got out onto the road.

The Transport Agency is writing to farmers in the region urging them to check their fences as the new season gets into full swing.

The agency's Northland journey manager, Jacqui Hori-Hoult, says her office receives about 50 complaints a month from motorists about stock in Northland being on the loose.

She says farmers can be prosecuted by the police if their stock cause traffic accidents.
