A donation made by wool growers to help save the Hector's dolphin will be used in a research project off Banks Peninsula.

Wools of New Zealand has handed over $10,000 to the New Zealand Whale and Dolphin Trust.

Remaining Hector's dolphin numbers are estimated at 8000.

Marine biologist Liz Slooten of Otago University says it's difficult to tell if the Hector's dolphin population is declining or not.

She says the money will be used to fund two students on a three-year project
