More signs of kiwifruit disease in Whanganui

8:12 pm on 25 September 2013

Symptoms that could be the kiwifruit PSA-V disease have been found at another three Whanganui orchards.

Kiwifruit Vine Health says those cases won't be confirmed for several days until lab testing is complete.

Its chief executive Barry O'Neil met with growers on Wednesday afternoon, following the confirmation of PSA-V at a Pauls Road orchard last week. That was the first time the disease had been found in the region.

Mr O'Neil says monitoring teams have been looking for the disease over the last few days.

He says the results of laboratory tests won't be known until late Thursday or early Friday but growers have agreed to work together to combat the disease and are remaining positive.

Noel Cooper, who owns four kiwifruit orchards in the area, believes a little of the disease is in some of his vines, next to the Pauls Road orchard.

He says he had been expecting it to come sooner or later and has increased his rate of copper sprays to treat it.

Kiwifruit Vine Health says there are 25 orchards in the Whanganui/Horowhenua region.
