Wind storm insurance claims rise to more than 2000

Rural insurance company FMG says it has now received more than 2000 claims arising from the severe wind storm that left a trail of destruction in the Canterbury region earlier this month.

It puts the estimated cost so far at about $15 million.

Almost half of that, $7 million, relates to irrigation equipment damaged or destroyed in the storm. FMG has received more than 200 of those claims.

Foresters assessing the damage to plantations estimate the storm knocked down more than a million tonnes of timber.
