Raetihi farmers told of further contamination of local river

Farmers near Raetihi have been told to be careful if they're taking water for their stock from the local river, as rain flushes more diesel through the waterway.

A large diesel spill at Turoa skifield has polluted the Makotuku Stream, which feeds the town water supply and also farms further downstream.

At a public meeting in Raetihi on Wednesday, Manawatu Whanganui regional council group manager of strategy and regulation Nic Peet said the council is continuing to monitor the situation.

Federated Farmers Ruapehu president Lyn Neeson says farmers need to keep aware of rising water levels and further diesel contamination when the council flushes the river.
