Concern over reports of wild pig release because of TB risk

TB Free New Zealand says reports of wild pigs being released in parts of Western Waikato is of real concern as they could spread the disease into cattle and deer in the region.

The pigs may have been released by hunters to help build up numbers, but this is illegal.

TB Free New Zealand spokesperson Brent Webster says it's of real concern because tuberculosis isn't established in the wildlife population in the area.

He says the risk for a disease to be transmitted into the wildlife and particularly the possum population and then there is the risk that those possums will spread the disease into deer and cattle herds in the region.

Mr Webster says wild animal carcasses also need to be buried deeply to stop them being scavenged by wild animals or pets.
